Is a Bleik Puffin Safari Worth the Cost?

Worth it for birders and patient photographers

A bleik puffin safari trades on one thing competitors in Northern Norway cannot replicate: the boat sits close enough to Bleiksøya that the colony fills your field of view without optics. Roughly 80,000 breeding pairs nest on that pyramid of rock, alongside white-tailed eagles, kittiwakes and cormorants working the same cliffs. There is no separate entrance fee at Bruvollveien 29 — you pay the operator's tour rate and nothing else, which makes the value question simple: does the sighting justify the fare? For anyone who cares about seabirds, it does, because proximity of this kind is rare. Photographers should temper expectations. Andøya weather shifts fast, swell makes long lenses unforgiving, and puffins fly at speeds that punish slow shutter discipline. Casual visitors expecting guaranteed close portraits may leave with fewer keepers than the highlight reels suggest. Book the seabird excursion for the density of life, not for a specific frame.

What makes it worth it

  • Colony proximity unmatched elsewhere in Northern Norway
  • Roughly 80,000 puffin pairs on Bleiksøya
  • White-tailed eagles regularly appear alongside puffins
  • No separate entrance fee beyond the tour
  • Bleik puffin safari tickets cover a genuinely wild spectacle

Keep in mind

  • Andøya weather cancels trips with little notice
  • Boat swell defeats long lenses and slow shutters
  • Wildlife activity varies; sightings never guaranteed
  • Rough conditions punish anyone prone to seasickness

Bottom line: If seabirds interest you at all, bleik puffin safari tours earn their fare — just come for the colony, not for one perfect photograph.

Head to head

Bleik Puffin Safari vs. Andenes Whale and Puffin Tours

The Bleik experience offers an intimate encounter with nesting colonies, while the Andenes tours provide broader access to marine giants and pelagic seabirds. Choosing between these bleik puffin safari tours depends on whether you prefer targeted bird observation or a diverse maritime expedition.

Vessel Size Larger passenger-focused vessels
Wildlife Focus Whales and diverse seabird species

The experience

What visiting Bleik Puffin Safari is really like

You park near Bruvollveien and walk down to the quay, where the boat sits low against the pier and the wind off Bleiksdjupet arrives salted and cold. Arriving between 11:00 and 15:00 puts the light behind you and the birds at their busiest.

Read more Show less

You pull on the offered flotation suit, take a seat on the port side, and watch the village shrink to a line of red and white roofs.

Minutes out, the sound reaches you before the detail does: a low industrial hum of thousands of voices. Then the rock resolves. You start picking out individual puffins — orange feet braced on the grass, beaks packed crossways with sand eels — while guillemots stream past the hull in low, fast lines. Bring binoculars; at 8x you can follow one bird from burrow to water.

The skipper eases off the engine beneath the eagle ledge and everyone stops talking. A white-tailed eagle lifts, and half the cliff empties in one motion. You settle the puffin safari Bleik price with the operator before departure, keep your camera strapped, and brace for spray on the turn home. Back on the beach afterwards, 2.5 kilometres of white sand run empty, and the bleik puffin safari tour resolves into one image: a rock breathing birds.

Bleik Puffin Safari to Bleiksøya Bird Rock

The Bleik puffin safari runs from the village quay out to Bleiksøya, one of Vesterålen's best-known seabird landmarks, where tens of thousands of Atlantic puffin pairs — lunde, in Norwegian — nest in burrows across the steep green slopes. Small open boats circle close under the cliffs, and white-tailed sea eagles, kittiwakes and cormorants are regular company on the crossing. Bleik puffin safari tours are run by local skippers from Andøya who know the colony well, and the trip also gives an unusual view back at Bleik's long white beach and the Måtind ridge.

Bleiksøya rises roughly 160 metres out of the Norwegian Sea and holds more nesting seabirds than the whole of Andøya holds people.

The pyramid-shaped island sits about two kilometres off the village of Bleik, in Vesterålen, and its upper slopes are honeycombed with burrows dug by Fratercula arctica — the Atlantic puffin, known in Norwegian as lundefugl. Estimates place the colony at some 80,000 breeding pairs, among the largest puffin cliffs in northern Norway. Bleik puffin safari tours were built around a single geological accident: a grass-capped rock, soft enough to dig, steep enough to keep foxes out.

Bleik itself is older than the birdwatching. Fishing crews worked these waters from medieval times, drawn by the Bleiksdjupet trench that runs close to shore and pushes cold, nutrient-rich water toward the coast. The same trench feeds the sand eels and herring that puffins carry back to their chicks, and it explains why sperm whales are watched from nearby Andenes. Bleiksøya is protected as a nature reserve, so the colony is observed from the water rather than walked upon. The village beach, one of the longest white-sand strands in northern Europe, faces the island directly.

Today the cliff functions as a monitoring station as much as one of the Vesterålen wildlife landmarks. Norwegian seabird researchers track breeding success here against warming seas and shifting fish stocks, while kittiwakes, common guillemots, razorbills and shags share the ledges below the puffin turf. White-tailed eagles nest on the same rock and hunt the colony in plain view — a predator-prey scene rarely visible at this range in Europe. The question of when you can see puffins on Puffin Island has a narrow answer: the birds hold Bleiksøya from spring into the fledging weeks of August, then vanish to the open Atlantic.

The harbour at Bruvollveien 29 has changed little in appearance. Small boats leave from the same quay used by inshore fishermen, and the crossing follows the shoreline beneath the Måtind headland before turning toward the cliff face. Bleik puffin safari tickets are issued by the operator, who also answers questions on rates; the village and shoreline themselves carry no entrance fee, at 0 NOK. What remains is the rock, the noise, and a colony that has outlasted every human enterprise on this coast.

A grass-capped rock, soft enough to dig and steep enough to keep foxes out, holds eighty thousand pairs of puffins.

Dress code

Dress in warm, windproof layers as temperatures at sea remain cold. Wear sturdy, non-slip footwear suitable for a traditional fishing boat deck.

Bags & security

Keep personal items minimal and secure in a waterproof bag if possible. The bleik puffin safari boat is a traditional vessel, so space for large luggage is limited.

Photography

Use a neck or wrist strap for your camera to prevent it from going overboard. Be prepared for movement from ocean swells when photographing the bleik puffin safari wildlife.

Families & strollers

All ages are welcome to join the bleik puffin safari tours. Children should be supervised at all times while on the boat deck.

Accessibility

The bleik puffin safari boat may be challenging for guests with limited mobility. Boarding requires stepping from the pier onto the vessel.

Food & drink

No food or drink is served on board the standard bleik puffin safari tour. Bleik village offers nearby local options for meals before or after your departure.

Birds beyond counting

We went out at nine in the evening with the sun still high and the whole side of Bleiksøya was moving with birds. The skipper cut the engine near the ledges so we could hear them rather than just watch. Bring a hat, the wind on the open water was colder than the thermometer suggested.

Puffins at eye level

The bleik puffin safari brought us close enough that we could see the sand eels hanging from their beaks. Sea was choppy on the way back and my wife was glad of the flotation suit. Our guide knew every ledge on the island and pointed out a white-tailed eagle we would have missed entirely.

Quiet and huge

What surprised me was the scale of the island up close, a green pyramid rising straight out of the water with birds circling it like smoke. Photography was hard from a moving boat, so I gave up and just watched. The harbour at Bleik is tiny and charming.

Cold but rewarding

Le safari macareux de Bleik was excellent even in April when the colony was still filling up. Fewer birds than the summer peak, though the guide compensated with detail about the nesting burrows and the local fishing history. Rain came in sideways for ten minutes and then the light turned gold.

Sea eagles too

Our RIB circled the whole island and we counted four sea eagles above the cliffs. Booking bleik puffin safari tickets a few days ahead was sensible since our boat was full. The quartz sand beach next to the harbour is worth a walk afterwards.

Real Arctic wildlife

The bleik puffin safari felt genuinely wild rather than staged, no feeding, no gimmicks, just a small boat and an enormous seabird colony. Swells were moderate and the crossing took only a few minutes from the pier. Guillemots and kittiwakes shared the ledges, which I had not expected.

Loud with wings

Standing off the cliffs on the Bleik puffin island tour, the noise of thousands of birds carried over the engine. Salt spray on my lens the entire trip, but the memory of that wall of rock covered in life more than compensates. Vesterålen landmarks look small from the water and the island looks enormous.

Worth the drive north

We drove up from Sortland and arrived early enough to see the fishing boats coming in. Puffins were arriving in rafts on the water, which our guide said happens before they go up to the burrows. Andøya feels like the end of the road in the best way.

Wind decided the route

The skipper adjusted our route because of the swell, so we approached the colony from the sheltered side instead. Nobody minded, and bleik puffin safari tours clearly run on the sea's terms rather than a schedule. Sea eagles perched on the ridge line were the highlight for me.

Small boat, big island

Only ten of us aboard, which made it easy to move around and see both sides of the boat. A bleik puffin safari tour in winter light is a different animal, low sun and very few visitors around. The staff at the harbour were relaxed and helpful about gear.
