Bleik Puffin Safari to Bleiksøya Bird Rock
The Bleik puffin safari runs from the village quay out to Bleiksøya, one of Vesterålen's best-known seabird landmarks, where tens of thousands of Atlantic puffin pairs — lunde, in Norwegian — nest in burrows across the steep green slopes. Small open boats circle close under the cliffs, and white-tailed sea eagles, kittiwakes and cormorants are regular company on the crossing. Bleik puffin safari tours are run by local skippers from Andøya who know the colony well, and the trip also gives an unusual view back at Bleik's long white beach and the Måtind ridge.
Bleiksøya rises roughly 160 metres out of the Norwegian Sea and holds more nesting seabirds than the whole of Andøya holds people.
The pyramid-shaped island sits about two kilometres off the village of Bleik, in Vesterålen, and its upper slopes are honeycombed with burrows dug by Fratercula arctica — the Atlantic puffin, known in Norwegian as lundefugl. Estimates place the colony at some 80,000 breeding pairs, among the largest puffin cliffs in northern Norway. Bleik puffin safari tours were built around a single geological accident: a grass-capped rock, soft enough to dig, steep enough to keep foxes out.
Bleik itself is older than the birdwatching. Fishing crews worked these waters from medieval times, drawn by the Bleiksdjupet trench that runs close to shore and pushes cold, nutrient-rich water toward the coast. The same trench feeds the sand eels and herring that puffins carry back to their chicks, and it explains why sperm whales are watched from nearby Andenes. Bleiksøya is protected as a nature reserve, so the colony is observed from the water rather than walked upon. The village beach, one of the longest white-sand strands in northern Europe, faces the island directly.
Today the cliff functions as a monitoring station as much as one of the Vesterålen wildlife landmarks. Norwegian seabird researchers track breeding success here against warming seas and shifting fish stocks, while kittiwakes, common guillemots, razorbills and shags share the ledges below the puffin turf. White-tailed eagles nest on the same rock and hunt the colony in plain view — a predator-prey scene rarely visible at this range in Europe. The question of when you can see puffins on Puffin Island has a narrow answer: the birds hold Bleiksøya from spring into the fledging weeks of August, then vanish to the open Atlantic.
The harbour at Bruvollveien 29 has changed little in appearance. Small boats leave from the same quay used by inshore fishermen, and the crossing follows the shoreline beneath the Måtind headland before turning toward the cliff face. Bleik puffin safari tickets are issued by the operator, who also answers questions on rates; the village and shoreline themselves carry no entrance fee, at 0 NOK. What remains is the rock, the noise, and a colony that has outlasted every human enterprise on this coast.
